From scratch: the story of an entrepreneur

From the very roots, all the way up to achieving a role of European leadership in the manufacturing of mechanisms and components for office chairs: the story of engineer Giovanni De Martin and his company O.M.S. SpA

The book “Dal niente” (“From scratch”) by engineer Giovanni De Martin, founder of the leading company in the manufacturing of mechanisms and components for office chairs, was previewed on Monday 6 May at the new O.M.S. showroom in San Vendemiano.

Edited by Francesca Tacca, the book is a retrospective on the life of engineer De Martin, who started a successful company “from scratch” through resoluteness, dedication and entrepreneurial spirit. Let’s retrace the main stages of this journey.

O.M.S (Italian acronym for Mechanical Stamping Workshop) was founded in 1980 in Francenigo.

In 1981 the company was moved to Cimetta di Codognè, marking the first step towards expansion. The following year O.M.S. entered the office chair components industry, starting the manufacturing of backrests, supports and armrests.

1986 was a turning point, as the company purchased its current headquarters in San Vendemiano. This allowed the expansion of the production spaces, laying the foundations for the future development of the company. At the end of the 1990s, the entrepreneurial skills of engineer De Martin led O.M.S. to European leadership in the manufacturing of plates for office chairs, having also implemented a new system equipped with a mechanical press and transfer mould.

Already well known as a successful manufacturing industrialist, engineer De Martin has shown his entrepreneurial skills in other fields as well. The C.N.C. shipyard was founded in Caorle in 2000, following the need for a maintenance service in the area.

When new competitors entered the market in the early 2000s, O.M.S. adapted perfectly to the new dynamics by shifting its production towards medium-high range products.

In 2007 the company introduced a laser cutting machine, thus expanding its range of skills and also approaching the technical carpentry branch.

In 2008 Cantieri Navale Caorle acquired a second site with a painting and sandblasting booth for large boats, while O.M.S. continued to invest in new machinery.

O.M.S.: an example of Made in Italy excellence

Today O.M.S. is a leading company in the office chair components industry, renowned internationally for the quality of its products and for features such as technological innovation and customer care. Its story is a clear example of how passion, resoluteness and entrepreneurial skills can lead to success, highlighting the real value and prestige of Made in Italy.

“Dal niente” (“From scratch”): a story worth sharing

Not just the story of an entrepreneur, but a story of life, values and deep dedication to one’s work.

Fibre and CO2 laser cutting

Films and TV have accustomed us to thinking about laser technology as futuristic, like something from Star Wars or space battles. But actually, laser technology has been a part of our daily production routine for a long time.

At OMS, we have always focused on innovation. Better equipment allows us to be more competitive and enables us to produce with greater precision.

Since September, we have installed a new laser cutting system with a fibre source, complementing the traditional CO2 laser cutting already underway in our carpentry division.

The CO2 source generates emissions at 10 µm, while fibre stops at 1 µm. This difference in wavelength makes the fibre faster and more powerful when cutting: excellent attributes for quickly cutting very thin materials, as well as special materials such as pure aluminium.

The fibre cutting performance is optimised for thin metal, up to a thickness of 3 mm. For thicknesses greater than this, CO2 laser cutting is the preferred choice, which can also be used for a variety of materials, such as wood, acrylic films and foils.

With its carpentry department, OMS caters to all sectors across the board, from prototyping to series production. Our customers are part of the office world, but also part of the industrial sector, with the production of machines for woodworking and glass, and agricultural machinery.

More than just the office: let’s play together!

Choosing the most suitable chair for your desk is extremely important. In fact, office workers spend most of their time sitting down.

User comfort, correct posture and the ability to concentrate at work – these are all aspects that should be carefully considered when choosing a chair. The key parameters are the quality of the materials, a good width / height / depth of the seat and adequate lumbar support.

The evolution of videogame industry has encouraged the production of gaming chairs. As today’s games are increasingly engaging and interactive, end users require chairs designed to offer top comfort and ergonomics.

Must-have features in a gaming chair include a reclining backrest and a set of strong, lockable mechanisms, essential points to ensure a better gaming experience as well as user comfort.

OMS has always been attentive to market trends and demands, which has led the company to conduct in-depth research on user needs and to open up to the world of gaming.

We are curious and creative. We like challenges and try to improve ourselves every day. These character traits are essential for our strategies, allowing us to produce mechanisms and components for your gaming chairs.

Thanks to our forty-year expertise and know-how, we have established ourselves as a reference partner for professional chair manufacturers.

Our mission is to develop and produce intuitive and functional mechanisms for ergonomic chairs and workplaces. This is now oriented towards the world of gamers.

In this context we have developed 4 mechanisms:

Sustainable planning

Nowadays, careful planning is an essential element to take proper care of our Planet.

We asked our technicians a few questions; here is what Michael De Martin, R&D for O.M.S., told us.

  • Michael, sustainability and circular design represent two of the most topical and important issues in today’s society. What are your guiding principles in developing a new product?
  • R: The development of a product involves responsibilities, both in a functional sense and in terms of environmental sustainability. When we start developing something new, the key elements to consider are not only the strength and functionality the new product should have, but also the importance of disassembling it and properly recycling its components. In recent years, new eco-friendly materials have become available; such materials represent our first choice, whenever possible. Steel – our main work element – is a very easily recyclable material and the sheet metal coils we use include a very high percentage of recycled iron too.
    O.M.S. has always been attentive to production technology by maintaining a cost optimization policy but also by exploiting the resource of energy saving; fewer steps correspond to less energy use.

  • O.M.S. exports all over the world. What is your product transport policy, Michael?
  • R: First of all, all the materials used by O.M.S. are exclusively purchased in Italy, thus avoiding trans-oceanic transport of components. In my opinion, defining something “eco-friendly” also implies transporting it in an eco-friendly way, without wasting hectoliters of fuel. Packaging is also a key element: whenever possible, we use returnable packaging. It is also very important to optimize the ratio no. pieces / packaging volume.

  • Is durability a significant factor in product development?
  • R: Our focus is to produce very durable pieces, much longer lasting than the warranty terms. In fact, if you can postpone the scrapping of a chair, you are already embracing sustainability. Moreover, our production methods have always focused on limiting the use of materials. Cold forging, research and field experience on sheet metal deformation allow a major improvement in our production tools and help reduce the thickness of the raw materials used.

Changing of office chairs components according to new standards

We pay attention to your needs and we are changing the components according to new standards.

From September 2020 we have new standards for office chairs introduced from EN 1335.

This time all Europe is involved in the change, also the countries with more strong requirements on dimensions and duration.

The main reasons of the new EN1335-1 are two:

  1. the need of adapting to the average anthropometry populations: height, weight and positions. The new standard, indeed, is covering a wide range of people that goes from5 th to 95th percentile;
  2. new materials used in production of office chairs together with the technical development of office chairs seeing in the last 20 years. One example overall: the adjustable armrests on height, width and positions. The new standard helps to face these new situations.

The main technical changes are:

  • new range of office chairs adjustment;
  • new way of office chairs measure according to ISO 24496:2017;
  • new types of chairs: AX, A, B and C.

As consequences the manufacturers like us are approaching a new era marked on technical changing according to the new standards.

O.M.S. has already taken steps to change and offer components that comply with the new regulation.

In particular we are changing the height adjustment of backrest supports, reaching 70 mm of adjustment and we are changing the seat slide stroke of synchron mechanism M601from 60 to 70 mm.

We are at your disposal for any information, please contact us!

Ergonomic chairs: all features and buying advice

The importance of sitting properly to work more efficiently has become a key factor in the last few years. Consequently, people now choose carefully the most suitable office and home chairs, in order to ensure a healthy posture and prevent the onset of bone and muscle disorders. Ergonomic chairs guarantee a healthy, correct and “custom” posture, adapting to the anthropometric characteristics of the user and complying effectively with many different needs.

To sit in a physiologically correct position, make sure that:

  • the sole of the foot rests on the floor;
  • the foot forms an angle of approx. 90° with the calf;
  • the calf is roughly in a vertical stance;
  • the calf forms an angle of approx. 90° with the thigh;
  • the thigh is in a horizontal stance;
  • the thigh forms an angle of approx. 90° with the chest;
  • the chest is in an upright position.

How to achieve this posture? What factors need to be considered when choosing the right ergonomic chair?

HEIGHT

The height of the seat must be easily adjustable through a gas pump or a gas piston, which allows a configuration adapted to the specific body of each user. The ideal position is the one that allows you to keep the entire sole of the foot completely resting on the ground.

LUMBAR SUPPORT

An ergonomic chair must feature lumbar adjustments both in height and in depth, so as to guarantee users adequate support for the lower back. The spine curves inwards right in this area, therefore, if you sit for a long time without proper support, it tends to flatten, causing tension and pain in the lumbar area. The presence of a support allows you to adjust the thrust in the back-lumbar area, thus benefiting from better support for the back.

ARMRESTS

Adjustable in height, depth, direction and width, armrests are an essential support to properly and comfortably rest the arms and to relax the shoulders. It is important to find the right adjustment for your own body, so as to give continuity with the height of the desk and the computer keyboard.

BACKREST

From 30 to 50 cm wide, this element gives support to the back, in particular to the lumbar area and correctly balances the weight of the spine, giving relief to the shoulders and neck. It is important to mention that the ergonomic backrest must be tiltable and the lumbar supports must also be adjustable in depth.

MECHANISM

The mechanism is one of the key components of an ergonomic chair and represents its “core”. These systems allow you to adjust the tilt of the backrest and the depth of the seat. The most innovative models allow a 360° movement, which supports and follows the user’s gestures and movements.

MATERIALS

Another key factor when choosing an ergonomic chair is the upholstery used for the seat and backrest. Elastic, breathable, soft and comfortable fabrics are preferable, in order to cushion movements effectively.

Be careful, though: excessive comfort can be counterproductive! It leads to bad posture, which could result in back and body problems and eventually cause functional and aesthetic damage.

Ergonomic chair is synonymous with greater wellness and productivity, an excellent remedy for back pain and inactivity!

  • synchronized, in which both the backrest and the seat follow the movement of the user’s body, thus balancing correctly the weight of the spine onto the chair;
  • non-synchronized, which features independent adjustments of the backrest and the seat, thus allowing to find the optimal static position of use;
  • permanent contact and permanent contact plus, in which the backrest is fully kept in contact with the body, thus properly supporting the user’s back;
  • oscillating, which allows the backrest to be swung and the seat to be moved forward or backward while keeping the angle fixed as needed.

Workspaces 3.0

The environment in which we live describes ourselves.
A theory that applies to both our private and public spheres; in fact, the principles and values that inspire us are clearly visible by the way we design and plan our workspaces.

More and more companies today incorporate different types of spaces within them: users can choose between offices, relaxation areas and meeting areas according to their specific needs. Known as Activity Based Working, this trend is the result of the organizational changes occurred in the managing of workplaces, and responds to the increasing need for dynamism and mobility.

Well aware of the importance of an innovative office as a strategic center of productivity, collaboration and growth, many companies have set themselves the goal of developing a more motivational working environment.

For this reason, the key factors in designing a workspace have become flexibility, the interaction between colleagues and the physical and psychological wellness of people.

But what trend is expected in the future? It could be the People Based Working or Healthy Office: companies will invest in human capital and new workspaces will be designed with special attention to employee creativity and health, keeping ergonomics as the main focus. All the most important choices – such as designing the premises, furnishing the rooms, selecting the right furniture and accessories that allow for a healthy posture, implementing the correct procedures for the use of technological equipment – we make them with the wellness of people in mind.

The chair is an essential feature in any workplace or study and, especially in cases of sedentary work, it is very important to choose the most suitable ergonomic chair. The distinctive features? Self-weighing, synchronized and oscillating components and mechanisms, comfortable and practical devices that allow you to adjust and recline the seat; some models are even designed to counterbalance the static nature of the sitting position and accompany the body’s movements.

How to Work Smart

In the last weeks, due to the restrictions derived by the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, more and more people have resorted to smart working, a revolutionary approach to work that is based on flexibility of place and schedule. Working remotely brings many advantages indeed, but it’s not that simple overall, especially when your home becomes your working environment.

Surrounded and enticed by potential distractions, the smart worker needs to find the full concentration and the most suitable room to be used exclusively as a home office.
Making this place a comfortable, practical and more professional environment is an excellent way to be motivated to give your best, increase your work output and make your goals easier to achieve.

First of all, set up your remote workstation properly. To create the right atmosphere, place on your desk all the stationery accessories you may need, then proceed to decorate it with some flowers or any object you like.
When you sit, make sure you choose a comfortable position with an ergonomic chair that keeps your back at ease and maintains the correct position of the spine.
To adjust  your seat is also important, as you may want to change the position, the height, the seat depth and the distance from the monitor.

Precautions should be taken regarding lighting as well: limit the brightness and contrast of the screen and optimize the diffused light in the room.

To be successful in smartworking, you need to be methodical and disciplined, set precise schedules, follow an action plan, but also make sure you take some breaks now and then. Get up from your chair, stretch your legs and have a snack; you need to take your mind off work, release tension, then you can start working with renewed energy.

One final rule: smartworking does not mean working 24 hours a day, therefore, once office hours are over, mute the phone, shut everything down and dedicate time to yourself, your family, your favourite hobbies and sports. But, please, do it in #istayhome mode!
